Name: Shell
Former Name: Sparkles
Future Names: Shellheart, Shellstar
Age: 24 moons
Gender: She-cat
Appearance: Tortoiseshell and white she-cat with gold eyes.
Personality:
Shell is a fairly relaxed, easy-going cat. Well, as long as she’s not starving. She’d rather be someone’s friend than enemy, and will usually go out of her way to help someone as long as it doesn’t end up hurting her or someone else she cares about. She believes that everyone can get what they need as long as they’re all willing to work together, and she will do her best to inspire her companions to look out for each other – to protect and feed each other, and make sure everyone feels like part of the team. She’s inexperienced in leadership, but she’s dedicated and hard-working, and cares a great deal for her companions. She will do everything she can to keep everyone near her happy and healthy, no matter what.
Having said all that…she can be a bit too trusting. She likes to believe the best of others, and tends to agree to deals with the assumption that the other cat will follow through on their end. Her dedication can also be counted as stubbornness, and it’s hard for her to tell when to cut her losses. She also tends to either underestimate her task or overestimate her own abilities at times.
Family:
Mother: Midnight
Father: Azrael
Kits: Shadow (tom, oldest), Sparkles (herself, the secondborn), Serenity (she-cat, middle sister), Saturn (she-cat, youngest)
History:
Her mother and father were barn cats, and for her first several moons she was the same. She was born alongside her siblings under the hayloft, and spent her first few moons playing with them and the other barn kits, until they were old enough and big enough to climb up to the loft and make their nests alongside the other cats they shared their space with.
At first, she was content to say in the barn. Why not? It was the best of both worlds, right? She could be wild and free as she wished, secure in the knowledge that she would have kibble waiting for her on the days when hunting didn’t go well and a shelter that seemed to withstand the worst weather nature could throw at her. It should have been a good, happy place to spend her life, but it just felt empty. She tried to enjoy barn life, but as she grew and learned how to hunt and fight she just couldn’t settle her heart, and she ended up leaving as soon as she’d learned the skills she needed to take care of herself.
She traveled for some time, and met several rogues and loners on the way. Some of these encounters ended in violence, but most seemed to go peacefully, with her making a temporary ally or at least going on her way without entering a fight. For a while, she settled by a river, and made friends with a few loners who shared the territory. They taught her more skills – fishing, swimming, and even a couple ways to patch herself up if she acquired a bleeding wound. She found she had a talent for moving around and hunting in the water, and renamed herself Shell, partly due to her connection with the water and partly to give herself a nature-based name like her friends had. Since she wouldn’t be going back to the barn, there was no need to keep the name given to her by the twolegs that owned the place.
She could have stayed there forever, with her loose-knit group of loners, honing her skills and listening to their stories about four large clans of cats who used to rule a nearby land. Unfortunately, everyone seemed to drift off as time marched on. Either they found mates, or they were captured by twolegs, or they simply wandered off one day while she slept. Eventually, she found herself alone, so she decided to move on. Maybe she could find that legendary lake and befriend the remnants of those clans? It had been generations ago, from what she was told, but surely there were some cats still around.
So she traveled, and now…she thinks she might have found the lake. Unfortunately, as far as she can see, all traces of those old clans are long-gone. But…maybe some new clans could rise from the ashes of the old? All she had to do to accomplish that was find an attractive piece of land and then wait for other cats to come join her, right? How hard could it be?
